Changing Your Password

Keep your State Affairs account secure by maintaining a strong, unique password and updating it regularly.

When to Change Your Password

Change your password when:

  • ✅ Every 6 months (security best practice)

  • ✅ You suspect your account was compromised

  • ✅ You accidentally shared it with someone

  • ✅ Company security policy requires it

  • ✅ You've been using the same password for over a year

  • ✅ You received a security warning from State Affairs

  • ✅ Former employee knew the password

How to Change Your Password

Step-by-Step

1. Access Profile Settings

  • Log into State Affairs at pro.stateaffairs.com

  • Click your profile icon (top-right) → Settings

  • Click the "Profile Settings" tab

2. Click "Change Password" Button

Located at the bottom of Profile Settings (blue button).

3. Fill Out the Password Form

You'll be prompted for:

Current password:
Enter your existing password to verify it's really you.

New password:
Enter your new password.

Confirm new password:
Re-enter your new password to avoid typos.

4. Click "Save" or "Update"

5. You'll Be Logged Out

For security, changing your password logs you out of all devices.

What happens:

  • ✅ You're logged out immediately

  • ✅ All other devices/sessions are logged out

  • ✅ New password is active

  • ✅ Old password no longer works

6. Log Back In

Use your email and new password to log back in.

First login with new password confirms it worked.

Password Requirements

Your new password must:

  • Be at least 8 characters long (12+ recommended)

  • Mix uppercase and lowercase letters (optional but recommended)

  • Include numbers (optional but recommended)

  • Include special characters like !@#$% (optional but recommended)

Strong password example:
St@te_B!lls2026! (16 characters, mix of letters, numbers, symbol)

Weak password example:
password (too common, no variety, easily guessed)

Creating a Strong Password

Best Practices

Do:

  • ✅ Use 12+ characters (longer = stronger)

  • ✅ Mix letters, numbers, and symbols

  • ✅ Use a unique password (not used on other sites)

  • ✅ Use a password manager to generate and store it

Don't:

  • ❌ Reuse passwords from other websites

  • ❌ Use personal information (name, birthday, pet's name)

  • ❌ Use common words ("password", "admin", "12345")

  • ❌ Share your password with anyone

  • ❌ Write it on a sticky note

Password Manager Recommendation

Use a password manager:

  • LastPass

  • 1Password

  • Dashlane

  • Chrome/Safari built-in password manager

Benefits:

  • Generates strong random passwords

  • Remembers them for you

  • Auto-fills on login

  • Syncs across devices

  • Much more secure than reusing weak passwords

You only need to remember one master password (for the password manager itself).

What Happens After Changing Password

Immediate Effects

✅ Old password stops working
Cannot log in with old password anymore.

✅ Logged out of all devices
Phone, laptop, tablet—all sessions end.

✅ Must log in again
Use new password on all devices.

Other Sessions

Other devices/browsers:

  • Browser on work computer → Logged out

  • Mobile app on phone → Logged out

  • Home laptop → Logged out

You must log back in on each device using the new password.

Why this happens: Security feature. Ensures no one stays logged in with the old password.

Troubleshooting Password Changes

"Current password is incorrect"

Cause: You mistyped your current password.

Solutions:

  1. Double-check you're typing it correctly

  2. Check Caps Lock isn't on

  3. Try copying and pasting from password manager

  4. If you truly forgot it, use "Forgot Password" (see below)

"New password doesn't meet requirements"

Cause: Password is too short or doesn't meet criteria.

Solutions:

  1. Make sure it's at least 8 characters

  2. Add variety (uppercase, lowercase, numbers)

  3. Avoid common words

"New passwords don't match"

Cause: Typo in one of the new password fields.

Solutions:

  1. Clear both "New password" and "Confirm" fields

  2. Use password manager to generate password

  3. Copy/paste the same value into both fields

  4. Or type very carefully, checking each character

"Can't log back in with new password"

Possible causes:

  • Typing it wrong

  • Caps Lock is on

  • Browser autofilled old password

Solutions:

  1. Type password manually (don't rely on autofill initially)

  2. Check Caps Lock

  3. Clear browser password cache

  4. Try incognito/private window

  5. Use "Forgot Password" if truly stuck

"Logged out of all devices unexpectedly"

Likely cause: Someone (you or another Admin) changed the password.

What to do:

  1. Try logging in with your current password

  2. If it doesn't work, someone changed it

  3. Use "Forgot Password" to reset

  4. Contact your Admin if you're not sure who changed it

8. Log in with new password

Email Not Arriving?

Check spam folder:
Password reset emails sometimes get filtered.

Whitelist sender:
Add noreply@stateaffairs.com to your contacts.

Wait 10 minutes:
Email delivery can be delayed.

Try again:
Request another reset link if first one didn't arrive.

Still stuck?
Contact support@stateaffairs.com with your email address.

Don't Share Your Password

Never give your password to:

  • ❌ Coworkers

  • ❌ IT support (they don't need it)

  • ❌ Support team (we never ask for it)

  • ❌ Anyone via email or phone

If someone needs access:
Use the Team Members feature to invite them with their own login.

If you shared it accidentally:
Change your password immediately.

Log Out on Shared Computers

Always log out when using:

  • Public computers (library, hotel)

  • Shared office computers

  • Conference room computers

Don't rely on closing browser:
Log out explicitly using the logout button.

Why: Someone could reopen browser and access your session.

Watch for Phishing

State Affairs will never:

  • ❌ Ask for your password via email

  • ❌ Call you asking for login credentials

  • ❌ Send urgent "verify your account" emails with suspicious links

If you get suspicious emails:

  1. Don't click links

  2. Don't enter your password

  3. Go directly to pro.stateaffairs.com

  4. Contact support@stateaffairs.com to verify

Password vs. One-Time Code Login

State Affairs offers two login methods:

Password Login (Traditional)

  • Enter email and password

  • Faster if password is saved

  • Must remember password

One-Time Code Login (Passwordless)

  • Enter email only

  • Receive code via email

  • Enter code to log in

  • Don't need to remember password

Can you use both?
Yes! You can choose either method each time you log in.

If you forget your password:
Just use the one-time code method. No password reset needed.

If you change your password:
Doesn't affect one-time code login—that method always works.

"Can I use my browser's saved password feature?"

Yes, it's generally safe if:

  • ✅ Your computer is password protected

  • ✅ You trust the browser's encryption

  • ✅ You're using Chrome/Firefox/Safari built-in managers

Even better:
Use a dedicated password manager (LastPass, 1Password, etc.) for stronger security.

"Can Admins see my password?"

No. Nobody can see your password:

  • ❌ Not other users

  • ❌ Not Admins

  • ❌ Not State Affairs support team

Passwords are encrypted.
Even our technical team cannot see your actual password.

If you forget it:
You must reset it yourself using the "Forgot Password" feature.

"Should I use the same password as other team members?"

Absolutely not.

Each person must have:

  • Unique email address

  • Unique password

  • Their own login

Why this matters:

  • Security (one compromise doesn't affect everyone)

  • Accountability (know who did what)

  • Access control (can revoke individual access)

Don't share logins. If multiple people need access, invite them as separate team members. Sharing logins is against our Terms & Conditions and may result in a temporary account suspension or termination.
