How Do I Search Within a Hearing Transcript?

How to Search Within a Hearing Transcript

When you're reviewing a hearing, transcripts can be quite long. To help you pinpoint the exact moment you're looking for, you can use the search bar to find specific words or phrases within the full transcript text.

Searching the Transcript

Once you have a hearing open, you'll find the search bar located just above the transcript text.

  1. Click into the search bar that says Search full transcript text.
  2. Type the word or phrase you want to find.
  3. As you type, the system will automatically find and highlight all matching text in the transcript.

Navigating Your Search Results

After you enter a search term, you'll see the following tools to help you navigate:

  • Match Counter: A counter will appear showing how many times your term was found (e.g., 1 of 15 matches).
  • Highlights: All matches in the transcript will be highlighted in yellow. The specific match you are currently viewing will be highlighted in a different color (blue) so you can easily spot it.
  • Navigation Arrows: Use the up and down arrows next to the match counter to jump directly to the previous or next result. The transcript will automatically scroll to bring the highlighted text into view.

What You Can Search For

The search is designed to be flexible. You can search for:

  • Single Words: For example, searching for budget will highlight every instance of that word.
  • Phrases: Searching for tax reform will find instances where those words appear next to each other in the transcript.
  • Partial Words: The search will find words that start with your search term. For example, searching for tax will highlight tax, taxes, and taxation.

Clearing Your Search

When you're finished with your search, you can remove the highlights.

  • Click the (X) icon at the end of the search bar to clear your search term and remove all highlights from the transcript.
